Bourbon Chartreuse Smash

Bourbon Chartreuse Smash

This cocktail comes from Woods Hill Pier 4 in Boston’s Seaport district. It’s a fantastic farm-to-table restaurant right on the water that extends their philosophy of using sustainable, local ingredients to their cocktail menu. They shared this recipe to encourage donations to their fund for furloughed staff, and I mixed it up for Instagram to do the same. I was so impressed by it that I knew I had to share it here as well. It’s just a fantastically tasty drink that’s easy to make and very impressive – all the hallmarks of a great cocktail.

A Smash, as you may recall, is basically a type of julep. It’s made with spirit, herbs (usually mint), and sweetener, and it’s served over crushed ice. The main difference between a julep and a smash today is that a smash has citrus juice as well. It’s a great cocktail template to play around with, as Tomas Watler did with this one, making the small but critical addition of Green Chartreuse.

Bourbon Chartreuse Smash

1 1/2 oz. bourbon
1/2 oz. Green Chartreuse
1/2 oz. simple syrup
1/2 oz. lime juice
3-5 mint leaves

Combine all ingredients in a shaker with 3 ice cubes and shake for five seconds. Open pour into a rocks glass and then fill the glass with crushed ice, heaping it over the top of the cocktail. Garnish with a mint bouquet and a slice of lemon (I used a cucumber blossom).

Recipe by Tomas Watler of Woods Hill Pier 4.
